"Disability Rights Agenda" NGO

"Disability Rights Agenda" NGO aims at promoting, protecting, and monitoring the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) in the Republic of Armenia.

In 2023, within the framework of the "Emergency Response" (Emergency) component of the STRIVE program, the "Disability Rights Agenda" NGO implemented the "Independence and Dignity in Daily Living through Assistive Devices" project. The Assistive Technology Initiative effectively enhanced the independence and dignity of displaced persons with disabilities by providing tailored tools, resources, and educational support. Through a comprehensive needs assessment led by an occupational therapist, the specific requirements of 30 beneficiaries were identified, enabling the procurement and distribution of adaptive eating utensils and dressing aids. Additionally, Armenia’s first guides on assistive technologies for feeding and dressing were developed in the Armenian language to ensure accessibility. Two webinars, titled "Assistive Technology and Adaptive Equipment to Support Feeding and Dressing," significantly increased the confidence of 57 participants in using assistive devices, with an average confidence boost from 2.91 to 4.28. Conducted in collaboration with Therapists for Armenia, these webinars featured expert-led sessions and accessibility measures such as sign language interpretation, further enhancing their impact.

Despite challenges including customs delays, staff health issues, and logistical constraints, the project made substantial progress through strategic collaboration with government authorities, therapists, and local organisations. Key achievements included the development of specialised evaluation tools, interactive training sessions, and strengthened institutional capacity. Lessons learned, such as the importance of contingency planning, robust logistical support, and integrating personal insights with professional expertise, will inform future initiatives. These efforts underscore the project’s sustained impact in fostering inclusion, autonomy, and empowerment for persons with disabilities.
